Cowan International is seeking an experienced Principal Metallurgist for an African site of a leading mining company which is exploring, developing and operating mines on several continents.

Reporting to the Mineral Processing Manager, the Principal Metallurgist leads and provides metallurgical, process control and laboratory services to identify and deliver performance-driven solutions that optimize and continuously improve all plant processes. His/her goal is to maximize the mill throughput, ore recovery and roaster performance to meet or exceed the KPI objectives while minimizing the cost.
He/she provides leadership in meeting HSE compliance expectations.

The Principal Metallurgist has operational, people management, HSE and Corporate responsibilities, including but not limited to:
• Ensuring appropriate risk-based health and safety processes and controls are in place to allow the delivery of safe operations and performance improvement projects in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
• Providing genuine cooperation with other Departments and working closely with departmental personnel to develop, plan, and implement strategies to maximize operational efficiency.
• Promoting a team-based culture between employees, departments and contractors.
• Identifying and actively developing/coaching key metallurgical, process control and laboratory personnel for career development; developing a succession plan.
• Controlling costs in line with budget and forecast requirements.
• Leading metallurgical technical, process control and laboratory sections to identify and implement innovative solutions that best utilize the process control system (including use of automatic control, instrumentation and smart logic).
• Setting production plans to meet the targets for ore production including shipment of bullion. Ensuring accurate and timely reporting of Processing’s performance.
• Managing the metallurgical laboratory and establishing a clear procedure (clear direction, scheduling and monitoring the results of lab analysis).
• Ensuring key field instruments used in the metallurgical accounts are maintained and calibrated regularly.
• Working with Group and Project Metallurgists on studies aimed at improving and optimizing process plant performance (maximizing plant throughput, automation studies, improving process recovery, roaster performance, cost performance, debottlenecking the process plant, optimizing the water balance, etc.,).
• Ensuring that studies are executed to budget and schedule and that identified opportunities for process plant and metallurgical improvement are fully documented.

• A Metallurgical degree.
• 10 years’ experience at a senior level as a plant and project metallurgist.
• Experience in mineral beneficiation through CIL, flotation and ideally roasting.
• Experience with working with a range of reagents such as cyanide, lime, hydrogen peroxide and flotation reagents.
• French language skills.
• A demonstrated track record in delivering productivity improvements in the mineral processing or refining industries.
• The ability to mentor and lead technical teams.
• Sensitivity to adapt to working with different cultures.
• Experience working remotely and with limited assistance.
• A demonstrated track record in analytical problem solving together with an aptitude to problem solving.
• Excellent written communication, verbal communication and computer skills.
