Cowan International’s client, an international mining & metals major, has a need for a highly competent Chief Mining Engineer to play a critical management and execution role at its operating mining complex in Northern Canada.

Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Chief Mine Engineer will coach, lead and manage a growing interdisciplinary owner-contractor team consisting of mine engineering, drill & blast, load & haul, surveying and geology personnel

FIFO Schedule = 2 weeks IN / 2 weeks OUT to multiple travel hubs in Quebec & Eastern Canada

Responsibilities of the Chief Mine Engineer
• Schedule and direct all mining activities including stripping, drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, ROM and reclamation.
• Manage all technical team and other personnel related to mine planning, drill & blast, load & haul, surveying, geotechnical and water management
• Manage mining contractor performance and alignment with the mining plan
• Meet Mill ore throughput and quality targets
• Deliver, manage and work within your departmental budget
• Coordinate with geology to ensure that the mine plan is followed in accordance with mine geology in new areas of the operating pits
• Act on all reported areas of concern and proposed improvements
• Coach / mentor your direct reports in your growing team
• Be present in the pits and always have an open door to all personnel
• Show leadership, initiative, positivity, resilience, adaptability and cultural-sensitivity
• Be a proponent of a team and problem-solving approach
• Champion and enforce sound safety and environmental practices via inspections, observations, work behaviour reinforcement and dedicated monthly meetings  

Experience and Competencies required for the Role
• A Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering
• >10 Years in mine operations - mostly in an O/P truck & shovel operational environment
• >5 Year in management/leadership role
• Prior experience leading interdisciplinary teams of >20 personnel
• Prior field experience is essential
• Track record of implementation and optimization would be advantageous
• A mine planning background would be advantageous
• Big site experience would be advantageous
• Experience overseeing mining contractors would be advantageous
• Strong commitment to HSE standards and sustainable development
• Excellent communication, management, leadership, coordination and administration skills
• Bilingualism (English-French) would be ideal, but not essential
