Cowan South Africa is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Engineer for this exciting mining project in Africa. Reporting to the Engineering and Reliability Superintendent, the incumbent will provide guidance across the entire Port & Rail activities related to asset management and central maintenance including plans to optimize the availability and reliability of the plant, continuous improvement ensuring plant efficiency at optimal costs to enable the achievement of production targets, and the overall strategic objectives of the company.
Technical assistance on maintenance activities (preventive and corrective if necessary) on a wide range of mechanical equipment in accordance with OEM requirements and the established policies, processes and procedures, providing safe and effective equipment maintenance services, to support in maintaining efficient plant operations, reducing plant breakdowns and minimizing production downtime.


Policies, Processes & Procedures:  Follows all functional policies, processes, procedures, systems and controls as well as the required safety regulations and job safe practices, to protect personnel, equipment and the plant, whilst fulfilling all relevant procedural/legislative requirements and delivering a quality, cost-effective and consistent service.
Day-to-Day Operations:  Follow day-to-day activities with maintenance team relating to planned preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment and ensuring that work processes are implemented as designed and in accordance with OEM requirements.
Maintenance and Repair Work:
o Provide technical assistance in complex maintenance tasks and repairs on plant, equipment and structures, updating the status of work activities and reporting any abnormalities as required.
o Perform Engineering inspections on the equipment’s and maintenance activities to guarantee that it is being implemented as designed and in accordance with OEM requirements.
o Supports in investigating equipment failures and difficult-to-diagnose faulty operations and make recommendations in a timely manner.
o Checks and update as necessary the preventative maintenance strategies and plans.
Safety, Quality & Environment: Complies with relevant safety, quality and environmental management policies, procedures and controls to ensure employee safety, legislative compliance and a responsible environmental attitude.


• Currently or was recently employed in a similar position

• Bachelor degree in Mechanical / Industrial / Production Engineering. Preferably a post-graduate degree in Maintenance or Production Engineering.
• 8 years of post-trade mechanical maintenance experience, preferably Port maintenance or heavy industry.
• Good understanding of mechanical equipment and instruments used within the industry.
• Strong understanding of the various mechanical components within the industry.
• Knowledge of pumps, bearing and gearbox overhauling and maintenance.
• Knowledge of Material handling equipment’s (conveyor systems, Stacker, Reclaimer, Shiploader, Wagon Tippler).
• Good troubleshooting ability and problem-solving skills.
• Strong knowledge of all maintenance tools and equipment related to mechanical installation, servicing and repairing.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and reports.
• Lean manufacturing, system approach and continuous improvement skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong risk management skills.
• Strong project management skills.
• Languages: Advanced fluency in English and intermediate French
