Cowan International is in search of a high caliber Mine Director for a large-scale mining & metals operation in Africa.

Reporting to the site Deputy General Manager, the Mine Director is the No.1 responsible for all facets of surface mining operations – mine production, mobile maintenance, mine planning, mine engineering, and initial ore processing and transport to the downstream fixed plant. 

Champion Continuous Improvement Initiatives and lead a state-of-the-art mine operating facility to steady state conditions
Manage all sub-departmental managers within a large mining department – mine production, mobile maintenance, mine technical, mine development, and ore processing & handling

Be accountable for reaching all mine, ore preparation plant and concentrate delivery targets
Develop an Operational Excellence culture
Effectively work in concert with your counterparts (Fixed Plant Director, Asset Management Director, HSEC Director, etc.) as well as the service departments (safety, supply chain, finance, human resources, etc.)

Manage the mining budget
Ensure that all HSE strategies are properly executed, e.g. land rehabilitation

Be an effective contributor to the company’s succession planning by ensuring there is dedicated training and empowerment of National superintendents, supervisors and lead-hands

Be supportive of operator training and trades training programs

In association with the HR Director, ensure that labour relations get ‘front-and-center’ attention

In association with the Community Manager, foster and develop sound relations with the community

Specialized in surface mining operations management

An experienced Director that has supervised on the order of 1000 direct and indirect reports within a Mining Department

Experienced with overseeing mobile maintenance and mineral processing

Not only a proven overseer but you are also technically strong in mine planning, design, development and projects, having had prior hands-on experience during your career.  In addition, you understand and appreciate asset management and dispatch

Business-savvy, comfortable managing budgets

An implementer and executer of mining Best Practices

Effective in promoting the development of National superintendents and supervisors

A proponent and driver of operator training and trades training programs

A communicator who empowers peers, subordinates and the workforce to yield a communicative and collaborative interdisciplinary work environment

A good listener and coach, capable of empowering your Manager and Superintendent reports

Responsible and engaged in environmental programs and community relations.

A university bachelors/tertiary qualification/BAC+3 degree in a related Engineering field

A minimum of 20 years experience in mining operations and mine engineering

Practical experience in mine management
Best practice know-how

A leader that fosters an organizational culture and track record that reflect success, composure, optimal teamwork and National empowerment
An openness to train and develop National employees

French-speaking ability which would be advantageous, but is not essential
