Cowan South Africa is recruiting a Marine and Shipping Superintendent for this exciting mining project in Africa. Reporting to the Port Operations Manager, the incumbent will lead all ore, berth, marine, transhipping, shipping and fuel bunkering operations.
This role will suit an experienced superintendent with cargo handling technical, analytical and supervisory skills, strong interpersonal skills and proven international experience.

• Embed safety as the highest priority throughout all Operational activities and within contractor activities (controlled and monitored)
• Identifies and communicates operational targets and ensures KPIs and objectives are met within safety, quality, cost and schedule within the marine and shipping operational area
• Development of the berth and offshore transshipping operational plans and schedules, including workforce, recruitment, mobilisation, operational readiness and training schedule, and associated budgets.
• Supervision and co-ordination of the Berth Scheduling and optimisation of the overall barge loading capacity.
• Lead the Quality Assurance function to ensure all cargos are safe to ship and meet customers’ quality requirements.
• Ensure operations input to detailed design, project execution, and commissioning and start-up phases.
• Define and participate in activities necessary to ensure operational success of operational readiness, FOOS, ramp-up and continuous improvement.
• Aggregates, organizes, and disseminates operational and project information with internal and extended teams.
• Coordinate with the Project Construction Team for specialist operational advice input.
• Harmonise with the company and offtakers to embrace all possible interfaces for shipping and cargos.
• Establish and manage working relationships within the team, including Procurement, Contract Management, Finance, Stakeholder Management, HSSEC, HR and Governance.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant business processes and procedures

• Previous experience in mining export and marine operations.
• Experience and knowledge of port, transshipping and shipping operations.
• Master Mariner/Captain, or similar/equivalent marine operational qualification, Diploma in Marine/Maritime or Logistics Management
• Minimum 5 years of mining exports and/or marine & shipping operations including cargo handling under IMSBC regulations.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience with mine-rail-port operations.
• Experience with project operations across all phases of project including staffing ramp-up; operational readiness; training & development; pre-commissioning; commissioning and ramp-up.
• Previous experience of fuel bunkering operations.
• Preferably African and remote environment experience.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to oversee operations with port supervisors, project/construction managers and PMC contractors.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse work environment
• Ability to analyse and generate specific management/stakeholder reports
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a greenfield project for owners’ team
• Strong operational and technical background
• Languages: Advanced fluency in English and minimum of intermediate French
