Cowan International is in search of a dynamic Major Maintenance Manager that is needed to oversee maintenance activities at one of the most dynamic and challenging process plants in all of Africa.

Reporting to the Site Engineering & Maintenance Director (who oversees mine, process plant and port facilities maintenance), the Major Maintenance Manager will manage the execution of all fixed plant major works, modifications and construction in an effective and efficient manner while ensuring safety, quality and good cost-control.

• Be in charge of all Major Maintenance(mechanical), including area-based & refinery-based Shutdowns, and Construction+Modification projects (all mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil aspects) across the Fixed Plant, Port and Tailings sections
• Project works consist mainly of fabrication of structures, tanks, piping, brick installations, rubber lining, electrical, instrumentation, hydro blasting, insulation and civil
• Manage a substantial number of Personnel (>400) and Budget
• Ensure that a large multi-national expatriate+national workforce (including contractors) deliver efficient services to internal clients throughout the plant
• Measure, analyse, manage and drive improvement via maintenance KPI’s
• Be a driver for safety, quality and cost control  
• Develop, standardize and implement best practices, systems and procedures where needed to improve, among other things, communication, task assignment and efficiency
• Play a part in promoting the decentralized asset management programs throughout the plant site
• Perform rewarding work in a demanding non-steady state environment
• Focus, as a strong Technical manager, on Improvement/Optimization Projects, to not only reduce cost, but also help reach Nameplate Capacity on certain unit operations
• Contribute to a growing Operational Excellence Culture by, among other things, working closely with production and engineering personnel
• Manage, as a strong People Manager, one of the most culturally diverse expat teams that you will ever see
• Manage a large multinational contractor workforce on a day-to-day basis while improving their safety practices
• Be an effective contributor to and proponent of the company’s Succession Plan and Training Programs, ensuring there is dedicated training and empowerment of National Superintendents and Supervisors

• A Strong Engineering Background
• University Bachelors/Tertiary Qualification/BAC+3 Degree in a Mechanical, Electrical or other related Engineering field
• 10-15 years minimum experience in supervisory+management roles combined in Chemical/Metallurgical Processing Operations
• Experience working in Big, Complex Plants
• Experience with High Pressure, High Temperature and Exotic Materials
• Multiple Experiences in Complex Chemical (e.g. gas manufacturing), Petroleum, Alumina or Nickel REFINERIES. Classic gold or base metal mineral processing plant experiences will not carry the same relevance.
• Experience managing and developing large teams (i.e. in the 100s), including contractors - Essential
• Experience managing large budgets - Essential
• Experience managing a large diverse contractor workforce - Essential
• Experience managing shutdowns or small construction projects – Advantageous
• A track record of improving and implementing processes
• Best Practice know-how
• Sound knowledge of piping, welding and acid plant practices
• EI experience, especially related to plant construction projects
• A balanced Technical Manager and People Manager Approach
• Experience being part of Continuous Improvement Initiatives and helping to lead a state-of-the-art plant operating facility to steady state conditions
• Track record of Training and Developing National Employees
• Previous Expat Experiences in Africa or other Developing Markets
