Cowan South Africa is recruiting to fill the position of Head of Department: Maintenance of Heavy Earthmoving Equipment (Maintenance Manager) at this remote open pit mining operation. The incumbent will manage the Maintenance Department and will report to the on-site Manager in charge.

THE OPPORTUNITY
• Manage all maintenance activities on all mobile equipment
• Manage / Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures;
• Manage interface with subcontractors’ managers and other senior personnel on daily basis regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of equipment or machinery, in relation to servicing, maintenance and repairs required;
• Manage / Continuously monitor spare parts and component stock levels and adjust according to equipment’s or machinery age and usage;
• Manage / Plan and keep record of the company fleet on site and ensure that documentation is kept updated as necessary;
• Play a pivotal role in managing and controlling expenses of the maintenance department;
• Manage / Coordinate and implement company planned maintenance systems and procedures for equipment and machinery in consultation with subcontractors;
• Manage / Ensure that the stores facilities maintain adequate stock levels and stock database systems in accordance with the company procedures;
• Manage / Control all the company fleet on site, including light vehicles and diesel mechanic- earthmoving equipment and machinery;
• Manage / Direct supervision of hourly work force to maximize efficiency and reduce operating costs; and
• Manage / Review workplace inspections and process audits as required and implement corrective actions.

YOU ARE
• A South African National (Non-negotiable)
• Currently (or was recently) employed in a similar position
• Very good with budgeting
• Proficient in automation controls and programming
• Able to cope with the physical demands of the job

YOU BRING
• A recognized tertiary qualification (Degree or Diploma) in Mechanical Engineering  
• A South African Government Certificate of Competence (GCC) for Mines and Works
• At least 12 – 15 years relevant working experience in the management of HME fleets and mechanical work. Experience with CAT mobile plant will be very advantageous
• Sound knowledge and interpretation of relevant legislation
• Solid knowledge of modern automotive maintenance methods and procedures
• Strong motivational and leadership skills
• Strong negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills
• Good report writing and record keeping skills
• Strong troubleshooting and decision-making skills
• Good computer skills
• Strong ability to work under pressure.
• Proficient in automation controls and programming
• Able to cope with the physical demands of the job
