Cowan South Africa is recruiting a Manager – Business Planning for this exciting mining project in Africa. Reporting to the Integrated Business Planning Director, the incumbent will define how to deliver on Strategy.
Structure a business planning process that provides insights to senior leadership on the confidence level of achieving strategy.
• Clarify roles across the business planning process, identify gaps, and suggest improvements.
• Define triggers to review business plan in accordance to the risk exposure definition.
• The business planning process comprises the following levels of planning:
• Strategy (asset life): Board defines the broad direction to achieve company’s ambition and sets the business expectations.
• Resource Development Plan, RDP (asset life): an unconstrained view of the preferred development alternative, projects from opportunity to feasibility stages, to optimize the value of the asset.
• Life of Mine, LOM (asset life): is the committed and agreed mine development plan, with projects at least at pre-feasibility stage, which provides the context and boundaries for the 3 year plan.
• Consolidate a single database of the capital opportunities across the business (from projects to social investment).
• Support the preparation of business cases and identify triggers to quickly review business case’s investment case.
• Provide direct inputs to company valuation model.
• Provide direct inputs to marketing strategy definition and product sales agreements.
• Develop financial models that bridge technical input parameters and commercial factors (including balance sheet and cash flow detail) to facilitate scenario modelling and support the management of uncertainty in critical project or material operating decisions.
• Support and development of standardized models for RDP/LOM as well as business plan evaluation.
• Conduct risk analysis and review risk evaluations using standard risk quantification methods, including Monte Carlo simulations.
• Provide direct inputs to senior leadership for the decision-making process throughout the different levels of planning

• Currently or recently employed in a similar position
• Motivated, consistently works to best of ability to meet performance criteria
• Confident to use networks in all stages of decision making to ensure decisions are not made in isolation, though not to the extent that would be seen as abdicating responsibility.
• Capable of consistently displaying a positive and engaged manner.
• Facilitate agreement and co-operation using a diplomatic and open approach.
• Able to work with diverse teams and sensitive to local social, political, and cultural realities.

• An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree) in a relevant Technical (such as Mining, Engineering, Processing, Geosciences) or Business discipline.
• Further educational qualifications that are desirable include: a formal financial qualification (such as Chartered Accounting or CFA) or a post graduate qualification (Masters or Doctoral degree or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
• Extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity.
• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and the important role of consistently demonstrating required behaviour and championing safety values.
• This work involves analysis, reflection and the use of data over a longer period of time, in order to anticipate problems.  It requires knowledge of the overall company system.
• Demonstrated timely, pragmatic and effective decision-making drawing on limited inputs and sometimes incomplete information.
• Demonstrated understanding of the complexities of internal and external drivers and their impact on strategic decision making.
• Experience in Mining and Logistics.
• Problem solving and organization & Process structuring skills.
• Business Case Evaluation: Track record in Financial Modelling, quantitative analysis, and in the application of techno-economic and valuation techniques. To understand and extract the key elements and drivers from all related disciplines of a study in order to produce a coherent Business Case that talks to the combined strategic, financial and risk arguments of the opportunity.
• Financial Planning & Analysis: Applies data analytical tools and techniques to create accurate management reports for decision making. Effectively presents information in a way that supports business activity and ultimately optimizes business performance.
